I just saw Geisha for the third time, and for the third time I was the only person in the cinema who laughed when Hatsumomo says "Blow fish?"

Hatsumomo, you used to smell like Jasmine. What is this new perfume? Blow fish?

It's so funny. Why doesn't anyone else laugh? _________________ The voice you hear is not my speaking voice but my mind's voice |

Because Hatsumomo thinks Sayuri "stinks of fish" so when she touched the perfume, Hatsumomo might smell like fish too, Blowfish in particular.
BTW, I found myself laugh during the give-and-take between Hatsumomo and Sayuri when she first danced and Hatsumomo and Pumpkin arrived and Hatsumomo kept criticizing Sayuri's skills (while showing her fan skills to boot), Sayuri's being a mere chambermaid, and being a young maiko. And then Sayuri remarked its because Hatsumomo was a maiko herself "a long long long long time" ago =) |

My friend explained the joke above, but there's something about the way she says "Blow Fish" that makes me grin just thinking about it! _________________ The voice you hear is not my speaking voice but my mind's voice |

I did think that was a good comeback for the characters' sake, but I really don't like that part because it reminds me of the interviews where Zhang Ziyi says she has admired Gong Li since she was a little girl, etc.
It [the scene in the movie] was a bit too real. You know, a complement that is actually an insult. Not that Sayuri was complementing Hatsumomo, there's just a similar tone.
Hey, maybe Zhang Ziyi didn't mean it that way! _________________ The voice you hear is not my speaking voice but my mind's voice |

The first time I read the remark made by Ziyi about watching Li's movies since she was a child, it rubbed me the wrong way. ('What is she really trying to say?') Then, I realized that Ziyi is 13 years younger than Li, and Li made her first film, 'Red Sorghum', when still a university student. So, Ziyi really was a child (about 9 yrs.) when 'Red Sorghum' was in theaters.
During an interview at the end of 2004, Ziyi said, "Gong Li is a superstar and she's my idol, you know. I love her so much."

Mmm, but Li was a mature-age student. She wasn't *that* young. I'm still skeptical, but it's good that you have forgiven Ziyi. It's gonna take a bit more for me to open my heart. _________________ The voice you hear is not my speaking voice but my mind's voice |

It sounds funny for me too I recall that Chiyo (as a child) said that sentence when she was in Hatsumomo's room. Someone in a forum said that the girl played Chiyo (as a child) looks like Gong Li. Her name is Suzuka Ohgo. How about your opinion?
For tieu_yeu_nu: Are you from Vietnam? if so, you and me are from the same country! _________________
