We know there are two female roles: the mother of the "orphan", and probably the wife of the character that Ge You will play. But we are wondering about a significant third female

My only concern is this might be a small role, this is a big cast. Hope Kaige does justice to her talent...
Does his wife often act in his films?

Marla,Chen Kaige`s wife will not play a role this time, the second actress is a rising comedian named Yao Chen.
And the last one is our Gong Li(I guess).
Sun Honglei will not be in the cast, the "Farewell My Concubine" actor Zhang Fengyi will get a role.
So the cast so far is Gong Li,Ge You,Zhang Fengyi,Wang Xueqi,Huang Xiaoming,Song Hye Kyo,Yao Chen.

Thanks, Paris.

The names you mentioned are in the recent Chinese reports. People were guessing that Chen Kaige's wife would probably also be in the cast because she has been in his recent films. But, again, that was just a guess on the part of reporters and fans.

We just have to wait and see what the announcement is on Thursday regarding the rest of the cast and if Gong Li is really involved...

Perhaps it will be a character that Chen Kaige adds to the story.

It would be cool if Li still had that kinda pull with directors....

Sure thing she has pull with chinese directors,Zhang Yimou,Chen Kaige...numerous top directors are dying to work with Gong Li,she is a super name in Asia. She is obviously above all the other chinese actresses,so if any director has the power to invite her to play in their film, that will be a half success.

Song Hye Kyo

I'm confused, isn't this woman doing The Grand Master right now....
How can ZZ(if she is involved) and this other actress work on two films at once.

Also read in some article there are TWELVE male roles. Wow.

The media conference for "Zhao's Orphan" was held today in Beijing. Director Chen Kaige spoke about the film. I do not see any mention of Gong Li, only the previously announced three cast members. I don't have more time to search for related articles this morning before leaving for the office... will search more later.

No new cast members were announced on yesterday's press conference. The director only briefed mentioned the three already announced cast. So, the wait continues.

CK says
""The cast have been identified , and there will not be any major changes.'

Am I translating this right?

I emailed you about the lasted report earlier this morning.

According to one reporter, Chen Kaige said at the media conference yesterday, "there will not be any major changes." But that remark contradicts recent remarks by producers that there will be eight main roles and that other actors are "in talks" / negotiations.

It seems that the main purpose for yesterday's conference was to announce Chen Kaige as some sort of cultural ambassador for a particular province in China, where the film story is set. Several dignitaries from that province attended the media conference. (Thanks to NewPath for info.)

Strange they would not mention Gong Li if she was in it, but I suppose anything is possible. We also may have to consider she went with a lesser known director.

First all the secrecy and guessing with the WKW project and now this Confused

Saw on a couple of blogs that Rourke has been offered two different big studio action films. Both starting filming in The March/April time frame...be intresting to see if he switches to one of those or still does SV.
